I graduated from Indiana University Southeast in 2013 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Informatics with a Business cognate. This combination provided me with technical skills, the ability to be an outside-the-box thinker, and the financial and managerial skills to understand what makes a successful business. After graduating I did some soul searching to discover where I wanted to use my skill set; I knew I wanted to not only make a difference in my organization, but in the lives of other people as well. Healthcare seemed like the perfect sector to make this happen.
Soon after graduation I began working for a company that performed audits for health insurance companies, I was using SQL to write reports based on healthcare data all day, every day. I found the data interesting, challenging, but also rewarding; while I loved my job, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to work in the IT department at a small, local hospital, which I took in 2015.
This role afforded me the opportunity to continue building my skills with reporting on clinical data, but also allowed me to gain new skill sets in the areas of financial reporting, electronic health record use, maintenance, and training, and security and privacy as it pertains to healthcare. Although, I was very grateful for the opportunities to grow that this role provided, I decided to leave because my one year old little girl needed my help growing at home.
After submitting my resignation, they approached me about continuing work as a consultant, and thus, a company was born. I jumped at the opportunity to help healthcare organizations become stronger through providing expertise in reporting and analytics. I take great pride in helping an organization grow through making its employees stronger. My favorite way to describe my job as an Informatics professional is “My job is to make your job easier through technology.” Apply this quote to the healthcare sector and the possibilities are endless.
Somewhere along the ride, I also completed my Graduate Certificate in Health Information Management and Exchange and my Masters of Science in Health Informatics. This means I have an expansive both professional and educational based skill set.
On a personal note, I live with my husband and our two kids in Southern Indiana, where I was born and raised. My husband and I are huge baseball fans, we were even married at home plate of Louisville Slugger Field in Louisville, KY! I am also a lifelong runner and love the half marathon distance. I also enjoy reading, mostly non-fiction, and staying up to date on HIT trends and news.
